Socratic
Google's free homework helper with step-by-step explanations.
About
Socratic by Google is a free homework help app that lets students photograph or ask a question and receive step-by-step explanations, curated learning resources and related videos across maths, science, literature, history and more. Note that the standalone Socratic app has been retired, with similar question-answering features now living inside Google Lens, so check current availability on your device.
Key features
- Camera-based question scanning for homework problems
- Step-by-step explanations rather than just final answers
- Curated explanations, articles and videos from across the web
- Voice and text question input alongside photos
- Coverage across maths, science, literature, history and social studies
- Free access with no subscription tiers in the original app
Pricing
Free
The original Socratic app was free with no paid tiers. The standalone app has since been retired, so confirm what is currently available on your device before relying on it.
Best for
School and university students who want quick, step-by-step homework explanations.
Limitations to know
Socratic is a study aid, not a replacement for teachers or official marking, and AI explanations can be wrong or incomplete, so check important work against course material. It also needs an internet connection, and the standalone app's retirement means the exact experience now depends on Google Lens and search features.
What users like
- Completely free homework help with no paywall in the original app
- Quick photo-to-explanation workflow for stuck students
- Step-by-step explanations that support learning rather than copying
What users complain about
- Standalone app retired, leaving a less focused replacement experience
- Explanation depth varying by subject and question type
- Internet connection required, with no offline mode
