Duolingo Max

Duolingo's AI tier for roleplay and live video conversation practice.

About

Duolingo Max is the premium tier of the Duolingo language app. It includes everything in Super Duolingo, such as no ads and unlimited hearts, and adds AI conversation practice: scenario-based Roleplay chats and live Video Calls with the character Lily. A free Duolingo tier and the Super tier remain available for learners who do not need the AI extras.

Key features

• Roleplay: scenario-based AI conversation practice in the target language
• Video Call: live spoken practice with the AI character Lily
• All Super Duolingo benefits, including no ads and unlimited hearts
• Personalised practice built from your own mistakes
• Unlimited attempts at Legendary challenges
• Offline access and monthly streak repair on Super and above
• Explain My Answer grammar and vocabulary explanations, now free to all learners in supported courses

Pricing

Pricing is not listed here, because it could not be verified from an official source at the time of writing.

Pricing could not be verified against a public official price page at the time of writing: Duolingo does not publish a single Max price on its website, and reported prices of $29.99 a month or $167.99 a year vary by country, platform and offer. Check the price shown in the app before subscribing.

Best for

Daily Duolingo learners who want extra speaking practice through roleplay and video calls.

Limitations to know

Duolingo Max is a study aid, not a replacement for teachers, conversation with real speakers, or official language assessment, and AI conversation can be wrong or unnatural, so check important language with a reliable source. Its AI features are also limited to supported languages and courses, and Max is sold through the mobile apps rather than the web.

What users like

• Low-pressure speaking practice through Roleplay and Video Call
• Fun, gamified experience inside the familiar Duolingo app
• Useful for learners with no regular conversation partner

What users complain about

• High price for only two extra features over Super Duolingo
• Conversation features unavailable or limited in some languages and courses
• No clear published price, with in-app purchase only
