About this tool
A Unix timestamp counts seconds since 1 January 1970, which makes dates easy for computers to store and compare. This tool turns such a count into a readable date, and turns a date back into a count. Timestamps above about ten billion are treated as milliseconds, since very large values are usually in that unit. Dates you enter are read in your browser's timezone unless you include an explicit timezone, so the same timestamp can show a different local time in different places.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Unix timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?
Usually seconds, but JavaScript often uses milliseconds. This tool treats values above about ten billion as milliseconds and smaller values as seconds.
Why does the local time differ from the ISO time?
The ISO time is in UTC, while the local time uses your browser's timezone. Both describe the same moment, just in different zones.
