About this tool

Divide the annual salary by the total hours worked in a year — hours per week times weeks per year — to get the hourly rate. The tool also shows the weekly rate (salary divided by weeks), the monthly rate (salary divided by 12) and a daily rate. The daily rate assumes a 5-day working week, so it is weekly pay divided by 5; if your contract uses a different pattern, use the hourly rate with your own daily hours instead. Use 52 weeks if you are paid through holidays, or fewer weeks if your contract excludes unpaid weeks. All figures are gross, before tax, National Insurance and pension deductions, so your take-home hourly rate will be lower. The same salary gives a different hourly rate at different hours: £30,000 at 40 hours a week is a lower hourly rate than £30,000 at 35 hours a week.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use 52 weeks or fewer?

Use 52 weeks if you are paid through holidays. If your contract excludes unpaid weeks, use the number of weeks you are actually paid for.

Is this gross or net pay?

This calculator works with gross salary before tax, National Insurance and pension deductions. Your take-home hourly rate will be lower.

Why does the same salary give different hourly rates?

Because the hourly rate depends on hours worked. A £30,000 salary at 40 hours per week is a lower hourly rate than the same salary at 35 hours per week.
