About this tool
A Bitcoin address is more than a long string: its last four bytes are a checksum of everything before them. This validator decodes the address from Base58, separates the payload from its checksum, and recomputes the checksum with two rounds of SHA-256 to see whether they match. A single mistyped character changes the checksum, so a passing result is a strong sign the address was copied correctly.
Frequently asked questions
What does the checksum protect against?
It catches transcription and copy errors, because changing any payload character changes the expected checksum.
Does a valid result mean the address belongs to someone?
No. It means the address is well formed. Any well-formed address can pass even if nobody controls it.
