Words to Numbers: Turn Spelled-Out Amounts Into Digits

Dictated amounts and written cheques spell numbers out. Parsing them back to digits is fiddly by hand and trivial with a word parser.

What is the Words to Numbers Converter?

Type a number in words, such as forty-two or two thousand three hundred, and get the digits back. The parser understands ones, teens, tens, hundreds, thousands, and millions, and it treats hyphens and the word and as separators. It is the reverse of spelling a number out, useful for reading forms, transcripts, or dictated amounts.

How to use it

  1. Type the number in words, for example forty-two.
  2. Keep hyphens or spaces between tens and ones.
  3. Click Convert to Number.
  4. Copy the digits for your calculation or form.

Worked example

Converting forty-two gives 42.

What number is forty-two?

Forty plus two, which is 42.

Frequently asked questions

Does it understand two thousand three hundred?

Yes. Hundred, thousand, and million scale the running total as the words are read left to right.

What about the word and?

It is ignored as a separator, so one hundred and five still converts to 105.
