How to use it
- Paste or type your text into the box.
- Click Count.
- Read the total, unique and most frequent word counts in the results.
Worked example
For the sample, the tool reports 18 total words, 13 unique words, the most frequent word the (4 times), and top words the (4), dog (2), fox (2), and (1), away (1).
Why does the same word keep appearing at the top of my count?
Because a small set of everyday words does most of the work in any text. If a content word, rather than a word like the or and, dominates the list, it is a sign to vary your wording or check whether that idea is being repeated.
Frequently asked questions
Does it count The and the as the same word?
Yes. Words are lowercased and punctuation at the edges is stripped before counting, so capitalisation does not split a word into two entries.
Does it count numbers as words?
Yes, a number separated by spaces counts as a word, because the tool splits on whitespace.
