Wave Speed: Frequency Times Wavelength

Every wave carries its speed in two numbers: how often it vibrates and how long each cycle is. Multiplying them gives the speed.

What is the Wave Speed Calculator?

Enter frequency in hertz and wavelength in metres. Wave speed in metres per second is their product, a standard wave formula.

How to use it

  1. Enter frequency in hertz.
  2. Enter wavelength in metres.
  3. Click Calculate Wave Speed.

Worked example

A wave of 440 Hz and 0.78 m wavelength travels at about 343.2 m/s, close to the speed of sound in air.

What speed is a 440 Hz wave with 0.78 m wavelength?

About 343.2 m/s, from 440 times 0.78.

Frequently asked questions

Does the medium matter?

Yes. The same frequency has a different wavelength in a different medium, so speed changes too.

What units come out?

Hertz times metres gives metres per second.
