VO2 Max Estimates: The Heart-Rate Ratio Shortcut
VO2 max is the headline fitness number, but lab tests are not handy. The heart-rate ratio gives a quick estimate from two numbers you may already know.
What is the VO2 Max Estimator?
A simple heart-rate ratio formula estimates VO2 max as 15.3 times maximum heart rate divided by resting heart rate. Enter both rates and the tool returns the estimate with a broad fitness band. It is an estimate only — a lab test or a structured field test measures fitness more directly.
How to use it
- Enter your resting heart rate.
- Enter your maximum heart rate.
- Click Estimate VO2 Max.
Worked example
Resting 60 bpm and maximum 190 bpm give an estimated VO2 max of 48.45 ml/kg/min, in the good band.
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a rough guide. Resting rate varies with sleep, stress, and caffeine, and maximum rate estimates carry their own error.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my maximum heart rate?
From a hard effort test or a wearable's recorded peak, not just an age formula, which is itself an estimate.
Does a higher VO2 max mean healthier?
Generally fitter, but VO2 max is one marker among many, not a full health verdict.
