UTM Parameters Explained: Source, Medium, Campaign and More

UTM tags are how you prove which campaign sent each visit. Learn the five parameters, naming conventions, and mistakes to avoid.

What is the UTM URL Builder?

UTM parameters tag a link so analytics can report exactly which campaign, channel or ad sent each visit. This builder appends the standard utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content parameters, properly encoded.

How to use it

  1. Paste your page URL.
  2. Fill in source, medium and campaign.
  3. Click Build URL and copy the tagged link.

Worked example

Tagging a newsletter link with source=newsletter, medium=email, campaign=spring-sale produces a trackable URL.

Should I use UTM tags on internal links?

No. Internal UTM tags overwrite the original campaign source in analytics and corrupt your attribution. Use them only on links from outside your site.

Frequently asked questions

Do UTM tags affect SEO?

No — analytics tools read them and search engines ignore them. Never use UTM tags on internal links.

Which three UTMs are required?

Source, medium and campaign. Term and content are optional extras.
