How to Read a URL: Protocol, Host, Path, Query and Fragment
Every URL is built from the same pieces. This guide explains each piece and shows how query parameters carry data.
What is the URL Parser?
A URL packs several pieces into one string: the scheme, the host, an optional port, a path, query parameters and an optional fragment. This tool parses a URL with the standard URL parser and shows each piece separately, including every query parameter. Invalid URLs are reported with a clear error instead of partial guesses.
How to use it
- Paste a complete URL including its protocol.
- Click Parse URL.
- Read each part shown as a separate tile.
Worked example
Parsing the sample URL reports protocol https, host example.com, port 8080, path /blog/post, query params tag = news and page = 2, and fragment comments.
What is the query string in a URL?
The part after ?, made of key=value pairs joined by &, carrying data such as search terms or page numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my URL fail to parse?
Most often the protocol is missing: a parser needs https:// or similar at the start, not just a bare domain name.
What is the fragment?
The part after #, used by the browser to jump to a section of the page; it is not sent to the server.
