How to Find Any Unicode Character

Unicode gives every character a name and a number, but the full catalogue is huge. This guide explains how searching by name narrows it down to the symbol you need.

What is the Unicode Character Finder?

Unicode Character Finder searches a built-in table of currency signs, arrows, maths symbols, Greek letters, and punctuation by name. Type a word such as 'arrow' or 'euro' and it lists every matching character with its official name and Unicode codepoint.

How to use it

  1. Type a word describing the character you need.
  2. Click Search.
  3. Copy the character or its codepoint.

Worked example

For the query 'euro', the output is '€ — Euro Sign (U+20AC)'.

Why do codepoints use letters as well as digits?

Codepoints are written in hexadecimal, which uses digits 0 to 9 plus letters A to F. That keeps the numbers compact even though Unicode covers more than 140,000 characters.

Frequently asked questions

What is a codepoint?

A codepoint is a character's unique number in the Unicode standard, written as U followed by hexadecimal digits, for example U+20AC for the euro sign.

Can I search by part of a name?

Yes. Any substring of the official name works, so 'arrow' finds every arrow and 'greek' finds every Greek letter in the table.
