ULID Generator: Time-Ordered Unique IDs

When order matters, a random ID is not enough. ULIDs carry their creation time in the ID itself.

What is the ULID Generator?

ULID Generator creates identifiers that are both unique and sortable by creation time, which makes them handy for logs, events, and records that arrive in order. The first part encodes the timestamp and the rest is random, so IDs generated later sort after earlier ones. The Crockford base32 alphabet avoids confusing characters, keeping the ID readable when copied by hand.

How to use it

  1. Choose how many ULIDs you need.
  2. Press Generate ULID.
  3. Copy the ID; later IDs will sort after earlier ones.

Worked example

Generate one ULID and the tool returns a 26-character ID whose leading characters come from its timestamp.

How long is a ULID?

Twenty-six characters: a 10-character timestamp portion followed by 16 characters of randomness, all in Crockford base32.

Frequently asked questions

How is a ULID different from a UUID?

A ULID is time-ordered and uses a readable base32 alphabet, while a UUID is not ordered by time.

What characters are excluded?

I, L, O, and U are left out to avoid confusion with digits and to prevent accidental words.
