TV Viewing Distance: A Simple Range From Screen Size
Viewing distance scales with screen size, and a simple multiplier gives a usable range. This post explains the factors and the limits.
What is the TV Viewing Distance Calculator?
Enter the screen diagonal in inches, and the tool multiplies it by 0.03 and 0.05 to give a distance range in metres. The range is a comfort guide for typical living rooms, not a strict rule — room layout and personal preference matter too.
How to use it
- Enter the screen diagonal in inches.
- Click Calculate Distance.
- Check that your usual seat falls inside the suggested range.
Worked example
A 55-inch screen gives a viewing range of 1.65 m to 2.75 m.
Does resolution change the range?
Yes, somewhat. Higher-resolution screens can be watched a little closer without visible pixels, but comfort still matters.
Frequently asked questions
What if my sofa is fixed?
Work backwards: a fixed distance suits a range of screen sizes, so choose a screen whose range contains your sofa distance.
Is closer always more immersive?
Up to a point. Too close forces head movement and eye strain, which spoils the effect.
