Trail Difficulty Calculator: Distance, Climb, and Terrain in One Rating
A trail's length alone hides its real effort. Combining distance, climb, and terrain gives a rating you can compare across routes.
What is the Trail Difficulty Calculator?
Enter the trail length, total climb, and terrain. The tool combines them into a difficulty score and a plain rating from Easy to Very Hard. The rating is a planning guide, not a safety assessment: weather, altitude, and trail condition can make a route harder than its numbers suggest.
How to use it
- Enter the trail distance in kilometres.
- Enter total elevation gain in metres.
- Pick the terrain and click Rate This Trail.
Worked example
A 10 km rocky trail with 500 m of climb scores (10 + 5) x 1.4 = 21, rating Hard.
How hard is a 10 km rocky trail with 500 m of climb?
Hard, with a score of 21 on this scale: (10 + 5) times the 1.4 rocky-terrain multiplier.
Frequently asked questions
Does it judge safety?
No. It rates effort only; weather, exposure, and fitness decide safety.
Why does terrain multiply?
Rocky and technical ground slows you and tires you faster than the same distance on a smooth path.
