How to Calculate a Test Score and Check a Pass Mark

Correct answers over total questions gives a percentage, but the real question is usually whether that percentage passes. Here is how to check both at once.

What is the Test Score Calculator?

Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions and multiply by 100 to get the score percentage, then compare it with the pass mark you enter. If the percentage reaches or beats the pass mark the result is a pass, otherwise it is a fail.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of correct answers and the total number of questions.
  2. Enter the pass mark as a percentage.
  3. Press Calculate to see your score percentage and pass or fail result.

Worked example

18 correct out of 20, pass mark 60 percent: the tool gives 90 percent and Pass.

Is 18 out of 20 a pass with a 60 percent pass mark?

Yes, comfortably. 18 divided by 20 times 100 is 90 percent, which is well above the 60 percent pass mark, so the result is a pass. Any score from 60 percent upwards would pass with that threshold.

Frequently asked questions

What pass mark should I use?

Use whatever your test requires, commonly 50, 60 or 70 percent. The calculator compares your score against the figure you enter.

Does a score exactly on the pass mark count as a pass?

Yes. Reaching the pass mark exactly is a pass; only scores below it fail.
