Swimming Calories: How Effort and Weight Set the Burn

Calories from swimming come down to effort, weight, and time. This post explains the MET maths and why two swimmers can burn different amounts on the same swim.

What is the Swimming Calories Calculator?

Swimming effort is described with a MET value, which scales with body weight and time. Choose an effort level, enter your weight and minutes in the water, and the tool multiplies them into a calorie estimate. It is an estimate only — stroke efficiency and water temperature shift the real burn.

How to use it

  1. Enter your body weight.
  2. Enter your minutes in the water.
  3. Choose an effort level and click Estimate Calories.

Worked example

75 kg swimming vigorously for 30 minutes burns an estimated 300 kcal.

Does stroke choice change the burn?

Yes. Faster, less efficient strokes at the same speed cost more energy, which is why a single MET value is only an approximation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a MET?

One MET is roughly the energy used at rest, so swimming at 8 METs uses about eight times the resting rate.

Should I eat back these calories?

That depends on your wider eating plan; this tool only estimates the swim itself.
