How to Create a Repeating SVG Pattern

Tileable SVG patterns fill sections with dots, grids, lines or zigzags at tiny file sizes. This guide covers style, color and spacing choices.

What is the SVG Pattern Generator?

Repeating patterns fill backgrounds with dots, grids, diagonal lines or zigzags without large image files. Choose a pattern style, a pattern color and a background color, and set the tile spacing. This tool writes an SVG snippet with a repeating tile you can paste into a page or use as a section background.

How to use it

  1. Choose a pattern style.
  2. Enter the pattern color and background color as hex values, then set the spacing.
  3. Click Generate pattern SVG and copy the snippet into your page.

Worked example

With the dots pattern, a #6D28D9 dot color, a #ffffff background and 20px spacing, the result is a 200 by 200 SVG snippet with a repeating 20 by 20 tile holding one dot centered in each tile.

How do I keep a pattern from overpowering text?

Use low-contrast colors and generous spacing, and keep bold patterns for headers or dividers rather than behind long paragraphs.

Frequently asked questions

What does spacing control?

Spacing sets the size of one repeating tile. Smaller spacing packs the pattern tighter, while larger spacing spreads it out.

Can I use the snippet as a page background?

Yes. Place the SVG behind your content or save the snippet as an image and repeat it as a background, keeping the colors subtle so text stays readable.
