How to Calculate Speed, Distance or Time

The speed triangle connects three everyday quantities, and any one of them can be found from the other two. Here is how it works.

What is the Speed Distance Time Calculator?

Speed, distance and time are linked by one relationship: distance equals speed multiplied by time. Choose which value you want to find, enter the other two, and the calculator works out the missing one. Just keep your units consistent, for example kilometres with hours, or miles with hours.

How to use it

  1. Choose what you want to calculate: Speed, Distance or Time.
  2. Enter the two values you already know.
  3. Press Calculate to see the missing value.

Worked example

With mode Distance, speed 60 and time 2, the tool gives: Distance 120.

How far do you travel at 60 km/h for 2 hours?

You travel 120 km, because distance equals speed multiplied by time: 60 times 2 is 120. The same relationship works in reverse too: divide distance by time to get speed, or distance by speed to get time.

Frequently asked questions

Do the units need to match?

Yes. If distance is in kilometres, time should be in hours to get speed in kilometres per hour. Mixing miles with minutes will give a misleading answer.

What if I enter zero for speed or time?

You cannot divide by zero, so the calculator asks for a value greater than zero in that case.
