How to Get Better Results from Speech to Text
Speech to text works best with a little setup. A quiet room and clear speech make a real difference.
What is the Speech to Text?
This tool uses your browser's built-in speech recognition to turn spoken words into written text on the page. Nothing is uploaded by this tool itself: recognition runs through your browser, and the transcript appears right here for you to copy.
How to use it
- Press Start listening.
- Allow microphone access if your browser asks.
- Speak clearly and watch your words appear as text.
Worked example
Press Start listening and speak clearly. In a supported browser, your words appear as text in the result area, ready to copy into a document or message.
Why does speech to text mishear some words?
Background noise, mumbling, and unusual names are the usual causes. Speak at a natural pace, pause briefly between sentences, and say names or technical words slowly so the recogniser can catch them.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it say speech recognition is not supported?
Not every browser includes speech recognition. If you see that message, try a recent version of Chrome or Edge, which include it.
Is my speech recorded or stored?
This tool does not store your speech. The transcript is shown on the page only, and you decide what to do with it.
