How to Sort a List Alphabetically
An alphabetical list is much easier to scan than a jumbled one. This guide explains how case-insensitive sorting orders your lines.
What is the Sort Text Lines A–Z?
Sort Text Lines A–Z arranges your lines in alphabetical order from A to Z. The comparison ignores capitalisation, so 'apple' and 'Banana' sort by their letters rather than by upper or lower case.
How to use it
- Paste your list into the box, one item per line.
- Click Sort A–Z.
- Copy the sorted list.
Worked example
For the lines 'banana', 'apple', 'cherry' and 'avocado', the output is 'apple', 'avocado', 'banana' and 'cherry'.
Why does case-insensitive sorting matter?
A strict computer sort would put every capitalised word before every lowercase word, which looks wrong to a human reader. Ignoring case keeps 'apple' and 'Banana' in true alphabetical order.
Frequently asked questions
Does capitalisation affect the order?
No. The sort compares lowercased versions of the lines, so 'banana' sorts before 'Cherry' purely by its letters.
Can I sort in reverse order?
This tool sorts A to Z only. For Z to A, sort first and then read the list from the bottom up.
