Sod Rolls: Counting Rolls for a New Lawn

Sod gives an instant lawn, but it must be laid fast. This post shows the roll count and why the allowance stays small.

What is the Sod Rolls Calculator?

Enter the lawn area and the coverage of one sod roll, and the tool adds a 5 percent allowance for trimming and joins before rounding up. Sod is perishable, so order for the day you lay it and keep the allowance modest.

How to use it

  1. Measure the lawn area in square metres.
  2. Enter the coverage of one sod roll.
  3. Click Count Sod Rolls.

Worked example

40 sq m at 1 sq m per roll needs 40 rolls exactly, or 42 with the 5 percent allowance.

Why only 5 percent waste for sod?

Sod trims are usable as small fills, and a large allowance would leave perishable rolls unused.

Frequently asked questions

How soon must sod be laid?

Ideally the same day it arrives, kept shaded and watered until laid.

Should I water before laying?

Lightly water the soil first, then water well once the sod is down.
