How to Make an SMS Link That Prefills a Message
One tap should be enough to start a text conversation. This short guide explains the sms link format and when to use the international number format.
What is the SMS Link Generator?
An sms link is the texting equivalent of a mailto link. Give it a phone number and the words you want prefilled, and it produces a link that opens the visitor's messaging app with a draft ready to go. Shops, clinics, and event pages use it to turn browsing into a quick question.
How to use it
- Enter the phone number in international format if you can.
- Type the message you want prefilled.
- Click Generate SMS Link.
- Share the link so a tap opens a text draft.
Worked example
For +15551234567 with the message Hi there, the tool returns sms:+15551234567?body=Hi%20there.
How do I prefill a text message with a link?
Use an sms link with the number followed by a URL-encoded body parameter. Tapping it opens the messaging app with your words already in the draft.
Frequently asked questions
Does it send the text by itself?
No. It opens a draft in the messaging app and the visitor sends it.
Does it work on desktop?
It works best on phones. On a desktop it may open a linked messaging app or do nothing, depending on setup.
