Sleep Debt: Adding Up Short Nights

A single short night is easy to shrug off, but the gap adds up fast. This post shows how to total it and how to pay it back sensibly.

What is the Sleep Debt Calculator?

Sleep debt is the gap between the sleep you needed and the sleep you got, added across nights. Enter your nightly need, your actual nightly average, and the number of nights, and the tool totals the shortfall. It is a simple planning figure, not a medical sleep assessment.

How to use it

  1. Enter the sleep you need each night.
  2. Enter what you actually averaged.
  3. Enter the number of nights and click Calculate Sleep Debt.

Worked example

Needing 8 hours but getting 6.5 hours for 5 nights gives a sleep debt of 7.5 hours.

Can one long lie-in clear a sleep debt?

It can reduce the total, but very long lie-ins can also shift your body clock. Steady, slightly longer nights usually work better.

Frequently asked questions

Is sleep debt a medical diagnosis?

No, it is an informal way of describing missed sleep, not a clinical measure.

What if the debt keeps growing?

A persistent large debt, loud snoring, or daytime sleepiness is worth raising with a clinician.
