Sentence Counter Guide: How Sentence Length Shapes Readability
See why counting sentences matters and how average length affects how easy a passage feels to read.
What is the Sentence Counter?
This tool splits your text at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks and counts each complete chunk as a sentence. It also reports the total words and the average words per sentence, so you can see at a glance whether your sentences run long or stay short.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text into the box.
- Click Count.
- Read the sentence count and the average length.
Worked example
For the sample, the tool reports 4 sentences, 11 words, an average of 2.8 words per sentence, and a longest sentence of 5 words.
What is a good average sentence length?
There is no single right number, but a mix of short and medium sentences usually reads more easily than a run of very long ones. Use the average as a guide, then read the passage aloud to judge it properly.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a sentence ending?
A full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations with full stops can be split apart, so check results for texts full of initials.
Does it count a sentence without ending punctuation?
Yes, if the final chunk has words but no ending mark, it is still counted as a sentence.
