Scientific Notation: Big and Small Numbers Made Readable

Scientific notation keeps huge and tiny numbers readable by splitting them into a small mantissa and a power of ten. This converter does the split.

What is the Scientific Notation Converter?

Enter any non-zero number. The tool finds the exponent that puts one digit before the decimal point and shows mantissa times ten to that power. Zero is a special case with no scientific form, and the tool says so.

How to use it

  1. Enter a number.
  2. Click Convert to Scientific Notation.
  3. Read the mantissa and exponent.

Worked example

12300 in scientific notation is 1.23 x 10^4, since 1.23 times 10000 equals 12300.

What is 12300 in scientific notation?

1.23 x 10^4, because moving the decimal four places gives 1.23.

Frequently asked questions

What if the number is zero?

Zero has no standard scientific form, so the tool flags it instead of inventing one.

Can it handle decimals?

Yes. Small numbers get negative exponents, like 0.005 = 5 x 10^-3.
