Rug Sizes: Leaving a Border of Floor Showing

A rug that nearly fills the room can look like wall-to-wall carpet. A border of floor around it frames the rug and the room.

What is the Rug Size Calculator?

Enter the room length and width, and the tool subtracts a 45 cm border on each side to suggest a rug that sits comfortably in the room with floor showing around it. It is a starting suggestion, not a decorating rule — furniture layout can change the best size.

How to use it

  1. Measure the room length and width in centimetres.
  2. Click Suggest Rug Size.
  3. Pick the nearest standard rug size to the suggestion.

Worked example

A 400 cm by 300 cm room suggests a 310 cm by 210 cm rug with a 45 cm border on each side.

Should front legs sit on the rug?

In living rooms, front legs of sofas and chairs on the rug usually anchor the seating group better than a floating rug.

Frequently asked questions

What if the room is small?

A smaller border, around 30 cm, can work in tight rooms where 45 cm would shrink the rug too much.

Do I round to shop sizes?

Yes, pick the nearest standard rug size to the suggestion.
