Road Trip Time: Driving Hours Plus the Breaks You Will Actually Take
Navigation apps often quote pure driving time. Adding breaks gives the arrival time you can actually promise.
What is the Road Trip Time Calculator?
Driving time is distance divided by average speed, but real trips also include breaks. This calculator adds a chosen break length after every two hours of driving, so the total reflects the journey rather than just the wheels turning. Traffic and roadworks can still add more.
How to use it
- Enter the distance in kilometres.
- Enter a realistic average speed.
- Set the break length and click Calculate Trip Time.
Worked example
400 km at 80 km/h takes 5 hours of driving, with 2 breaks of 20 minutes, for a total of about 5 hours 40 minutes.
How long is a 400 km trip at 80 km/h with 20-minute breaks?
About 5 hours 40 minutes: 5 hours driving plus 2 breaks of 20 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Why a break every two hours?
It is a common safety guide for staying alert. Tired driving is dangerous, so regular stops are worth the extra minutes.
Does average speed mean the speed limit?
No. Average speed is lower than cruising speed once towns, junctions, and slower stretches are included.
