Repeated Phrase Finder Guide: Catching Phrases You Did Not Notice Repeating

Understand how three-word phrase checks surface hidden repetition in drafts.

What is the Repeated Phrase Finder?

This tool slides through your text three words at a time and lists any three-word phrase that appears more than once, ignoring case and punctuation. Repeating phrases are easy to miss when reading, but they stand out in a list. Use it to tighten drafts and catch copied or overused wording.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text into the box.
  2. Click Find.
  3. Review the repeated three-word phrases and their counts.

Worked example

For the sample, the tool reports 3 repeated phrases: the cat sat (3 times), cat sat on (2 times) and sat on the (2 times).

Is a repeated phrase always a problem?

Not always. Refrains, slogans and technical terms repeat on purpose. The tool flags them so you can decide, not so you must delete every one.

Frequently asked questions

Why three words and not two?

Three words are specific enough to be meaningful, while two-word pairs repeat constantly in ordinary writing and would flood the results.

Does punctuation break a phrase?

No. Edge punctuation is stripped and case is ignored, so a phrase counts even if it ends a sentence in one place and continues in another.
