Pregnancy Weight Gain: The Ranges by Starting Band

Total gain ranges differ by starting BMI band, which surprises many people. This post explains the ranges and why individual advice still matters.

What is the Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator?

Recommended total gain depends on pre-pregnancy BMI band, with lower bands having higher ranges. Enter your starting weight, current weight, and band, and the tool shows the recommended total range and how much of it is already used. This is general information only, not medical advice — check with a clinician about your own pregnancy.

How to use it

  1. Enter your pre-pregnancy weight.
  2. Enter your current weight.
  3. Choose your pre-pregnancy BMI band and click Check Weight Gain.

Worked example

From 60 kg to 68 kg is a gain of 8 kg, inside the usual 11.5 to 16 kg total range for the normal band.

Is gaining below the range a problem?

Not necessarily on its own, but weight gain is only one marker among many, so raise any worry with your clinician rather than judging from one number.

Frequently asked questions

Do the ranges cover twins?

No, twin pregnancies have higher recommended ranges; this tool covers single pregnancies only.

Is this medical advice?
