Potluck Servings: Why Each Dish Serves Only Part of the Crowd

A potluck dish is not a main course for everyone. Dividing guests by dishes, with a buffer, stops both shortage and a mountain of one dish.

What is the Potluck Servings Calculator?

At a potluck, every dish serves only part of the crowd, so this calculator divides guests by the number of dishes to find servings per dish. It assumes guests sample several dishes rather than eating a full portion of each one. Confirm the dish count before cooking.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of guests.
  2. Enter the number of dishes being brought.
  3. Click Calculate Servings for the per-dish count.

Worked example

20 guests across 5 dishes need about 5 servings per dish, from 20 divided by 5 with a small buffer.

How many servings should each dish cover for 20 guests and 5 dishes?

About 5 servings per dish, since guests sample several dishes rather than eating a full portion of each.

Frequently asked questions

What if one dish is the only main?

Then it needs far more: plan a full portion per guest for a sole main, and use this calculator only for shared sides and desserts.

Should I bring extra for late guests?

A small buffer is already included. For uncertain numbers, round up one more serving rather than doubling the dish.
