How to Pick a Pet Name You Will Still Love in a Year

A pet name needs to survive daily use, vet visits, and calling across the park. Here is a simple way to choose one.

What is the Pet Name Generator?

This tool suggests three pet names at a time, either from lists suited to dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and fish, or built around a word you type in. Leave the word blank for a fully random pick, or add a favourite word to get names with a personal touch.

How to use it

  1. Type a keyword if you have a word in mind, or leave it blank.
  2. Choose the pet type, or Any for a mix.
  3. Press Generate names and try the ideas out loud.

Worked example

With the keyword Maple and pet type Dog, you get: Maple, Little Maple, and Captain Maple. With the keyword left blank, you get three random names from the chosen pet list instead.

What makes a good pet name?

Short names with clear sounds are easiest for a pet to learn and for you to call out. Say the name aloud a few times, check it does not sound like a command you use often, and make sure everyone in the household likes saying it.

Frequently asked questions

What if I leave the keyword blank?

You get three random names from the list for your chosen pet type, which is handy when you are starting from scratch.

Do the names suit any pet?

The lists are grouped by pet type, but a name you love works for any animal, so pick the one that fits your pet best.
