How Pencil Sketch Effects Simplify a Photo
A sketch effect keeps tone and shape while dropping colour and fine detail.
What is the Pencil Sketch Effect Generator?
This tool uses a simplified tone model: darker original tones stay darker, while the strength setting controls how much of the original tone is kept in the sketch version. The browser preview applies that tone change to a gradient, so you can judge the strength. It is a tone effect, not a full edge-detection sketch pipeline, so fine pencil lines from a real photo are not reproduced here.
How to use it
- Set the sketch strength
- Pick the preview size
- Check the tone samples and download the preview
Worked example
Strength 70 percent on a 400 by 300 preview maps grey 0 to 255, grey 128 to 165 and grey 255 to 77 in the simplified tone model.
Why do sketch previews look lighter than the photo?
Because pencil on paper is mostly light tones with dark lines, so the mapping lifts most values towards white.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a real pencil sketch?
It is a simplified tone effect for previewing strength, not a full sketch pipeline with edge detection and shading.
What does higher strength do?
It keeps more of the original tone in the result, so the sketch looks darker and more defined.
