Payback Period: How Fast Do You Get Your Money Back?

Payback is the simplest investment test: how many years until cumulative cash flow covers the original outlay?

What is the Payback Period Calculator?

Enter the initial investment and annual net cash flow, and the tool gives the payback period in years. This is an estimate that ignores the time value of money and assumes steady cash flow, so use it alongside NPV or IRR for bigger decisions.

How to use it

  1. Enter the initial investment.
  2. Enter annual net cash flow.
  3. Click Calculate Payback Period.

Worked example

With a 10000 investment and 3000 annual net cash flow, payback takes about 3.33 years.

Why is payback not enough alone?

It ignores everything after payback and the time value of money, so a project that pays back fast but then fades can look better than it is.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use gross or net cash flow?

Net. Use cash left after running costs, since that is what actually repays the investment.

What if cash flow varies by year?

This tool assumes a flat figure. For uneven years, add each year's flow until the total passes the investment.
