How to Size a Passport Photo Correctly

Passport photos are rejected more often for size and background than for anything else.

What is the Passport Photo Maker?

Give the required print size in millimetres and the tool converts it to pixels at 300 dots per inch, which is the resolution most print services expect. The browser preview shows a plain background with a simple head-and-shoulders guide, not a real photo, so use it to check size and background, then place your own portrait in the same frame. Always check your own country's current photo rules before submitting.

How to use it

  1. Enter the required width and height in millimetres
  2. Pick the background colour
  3. Check the pixel size, then use your own portrait at that size

Worked example

35 by 45 millimetres at 300 dpi gives 413 by 531 pixels with an aspect ratio of 0.78.

What size should a passport photo be?

It depends on the country, but 35 by 45 millimetres is a common size, and at 300 dpi that is 413 by 531 pixels. Always confirm the size your own authority asks for.

Frequently asked questions

Why 300 dpi?

Because print services commonly ask for 300 dots per inch, and the pixel count follows directly from the print size at that resolution.

Is the preview a valid passport photo?

No. The preview is only a size and layout guide. A real submission must be your own recent portrait meeting your country's rules.
