Paragraph Counter Guide: Breaking Text Into Readable Blocks
Learn how paragraph breaks help readers and how to use paragraph counts when editing.
What is the Paragraph Counter?
This tool treats each block of text separated by a blank line as one paragraph. It reports how many paragraphs you have, how many words they hold in total, and the average words per paragraph, plus the longest paragraph. That makes it easy to spot a wall of text that should be broken up.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text, keeping a blank line between paragraphs.
- Click Count.
- Read the paragraph count and the average length.
Worked example
For the sample, the tool reports 3 paragraphs, 51 words, an average of 17.0 words per paragraph, and a longest paragraph of 17 words.
How long should a paragraph be?
Short paragraphs are easier to scan, especially on a phone, but a paragraph should still hold one complete idea. Aim for a comfortable size for your reader rather than a fixed word count.
Frequently asked questions
What if my paragraphs are separated by single line breaks only?
Then they may be counted as one paragraph. Add a blank line between paragraphs for a clean count.
Does an empty line at the start or end matter?
No. Leading and trailing blank lines are ignored before counting.
