How Overtime Pay Is Calculated

Overtime pay has two parts: normal hours at the normal rate, and extra hours at a higher rate. This guide separates them clearly.

What is the Overtime Pay Calculator?

Regular pay is the hourly rate multiplied by regular hours. Overtime pay is the rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier, then multiplied by overtime hours. Adding both parts gives total pay for the period. A common multiplier is 1.5, meaning time and a half.

How to use it

  1. Enter your normal hourly rate.
  2. Enter your regular hours and your overtime hours separately.
  3. Enter the overtime multiplier, for example 1.5, then read regular, overtime, and total pay.

Worked example

Rate 20, 40 regular hours, 10 overtime hours at 1.5x: regular pay 800, overtime pay 300, total pay 1,100.

What is the total pay at 20 per hour for 40 regular hours plus 10 overtime hours at time and a half?

The total is 1,100. Regular pay is 20 times 40, which is 800. Overtime pay is 20 times 1.5 times 10, which is 300. Adding 800 and 300 gives 1,100.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 1.5 multiplier mean?

It means each overtime hour pays one and a half times the normal rate, often called time and a half.

Do I include overtime hours in regular hours too?

No, enter regular and overtime hours separately so the same hours are not counted twice.
