How to Find Your Public IP Address

Your public IP is what websites and services see. This guide explains public versus private addresses and why the number changes.

What is the My IP Address Tool?

Your public IP address is the address the internet sees for your connection, and it can change when you switch networks or use a VPN. This tool fetches it from a public IP service (api.ipify.org) when you click the button: that fetch is the one part of this tool that is not purely local, and the service will see the request as any website would. The result shown is your public address, not your private address on your local network.

How to use it

  1. Click Show my IP.
  2. Read the public IP address shown.
  3. Use it only where you need it, such as filling in an allowlist.

Worked example

Clicking Show my IP contacts the public IP service and displays your current public IP address, for example in dotted form like 203.0.113.42 (the actual address shown depends on your connection).

Why does my IP address change?

Most home connections get a new public address from time to time, and switching networks or a VPN changes it immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool work without the internet?

No. Unlike most tools here, it must fetch a public IP service, so it needs a working connection.

Is this my private network address?

No. It shows your public address as seen on the internet, which is different from addresses like 192.168.x.x on your local network.
