Mulch Bags: From Bed Area to Bag Count

Mulch is sold by volume, but beds are measured by area and depth. This post bridges the two and adds a settling allowance.

What is the Mulch Bags Calculator?

Enter the bed area and the mulch depth, and the tool works out the volume, adds a 10 percent allowance for settling and uneven spreading, and divides by the bag volume. The allowance is shown separately.

How to use it

  1. Measure the bed area in square metres.
  2. Enter the mulch depth in centimetres.
  3. Enter the bag volume and click Count Mulch Bags.

Worked example

10 sq m at 5 cm deep needs 0.5 cubic metres, or 0.55 with waste, which is 11 bags of 50 litres.

How deep should mulch be?

Around 5 to 8 cm is typical for beds, kept away from plant stems to avoid rot.

Frequently asked questions

Does mulch settle much?

Yes, fresh mulch settles noticeably in the first weeks, which is why the allowance matters.

Can I use bulk mulch instead?

For large beds, bulk delivery is often cheaper; use the volume figure, not the bag count, for that order.
