Moving Boxes: Estimating Boxes by Room
Box counts are guesswork until you pack, but a per-room figure gives an orderable starting point. This post shows the split by size.
What is the Moving Boxes Calculator?
Enter the number of rooms and the boxes you expect per room, and the tool totals the boxes and splits them into small, medium, and large shares of 40, 40, and 20 percent. It is a planning estimate — book-filled rooms need more small boxes than the split assumes.
How to use it
- Enter the number of rooms.
- Enter the boxes you expect per room.
- Click Estimate Boxes.
Worked example
3 rooms at 12 boxes each need 36 boxes: 14 small, 14 medium, and 8 large.
Why so many small boxes?
Books and heavy items belong in small boxes, since a large box of books is too heavy to lift safely.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy extra boxes?
Yes, a few extra small and medium boxes cover the last cupboards that always hold more than expected.
What about wardrobes?
Wardrobe boxes are counted separately, since hanging clothes need their own box type.
