Minesweeper Game: Clear the Grid Without Hitting a Mine

Minesweeper is logic, not luck, once the first squares open up. A 1 next to a single covered neighbour tells you exactly where that mine sits.

What is the Minesweeper Game?

A grid hides a set number of mines, and every revealed number tells you how many mines touch that square. Use those counts to work out where the mines must be, flag them, and clear every safe square. In the browser you click squares to reveal them and switch to flag mode to mark suspects.

How to use it

  1. Choose a difficulty.
  2. Click Lay the Mines.
  3. In the browser, click a square to reveal it.
  4. Use the touching-mine counts to flag mines and clear the safe squares.

Worked example

An easy board is 8 by 8 with 10 mines, where each number counts the mines touching that square.

How do the numbers in Minesweeper work?

Each number counts the mines in the eight squares around it, including diagonals. A 0 means no mine touches that square, so its neighbours are safe to open.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do with a square I am sure is a mine?

Flag it, so you never click it by accident and its neighbours' counts become easier to read.

Is the first click always safe?

Not in every version of the game. This version places mines before the first click, so open a corner or an edge first to learn the board quickly.
