How to Write a Meme Caption That Reads Instantly

A meme caption works when the joke lands before the reader has to work for it.

What is the Meme Generator?

This tool lays your two captions over a square canvas, shrinking the font when either caption is long so the text stays inside the frame. In the browser the result is drawn on a canvas and can be downloaded as a PNG. It starts from a plain coloured background, so if you want your own photo behind the text, that photo step is not included here.

How to use it

  1. Type the top caption
  2. Type the bottom caption
  3. Generate the image and download it

Worked example

WHEN THE CODE over FINALLY WORKS gives a 600 by 600 image with 36-pixel captions and a downloadable PNG in the browser.

Should meme text be long or short?

Short, because the image is small on a phone and long lines are skipped. Put the setup on top, the punchline at the bottom, and let the picture do the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the font shrink sometimes?

Long captions use a smaller size so they fit the width of the square instead of running off the edge.

Can I add my own photo?

Not in this version. The meme is built on a plain background, and a photo upload is not part of the tool.
