Markdown Table Guide: Building Tables From Comma-Separated Lines
Learn how headers, separator rows and padded cells combine into a valid Markdown table.
What is the Markdown Table Generator?
Type your headers as one comma-separated line and your rows below, one row per line with cells separated by commas, and this tool assembles a Markdown table with a header row, a separator row and one row per line. Rows shorter than the header are padded with empty cells, and longer rows are trimmed to the header width. Paste the result straight into a Markdown document or readme.
How to use it
- Type the headers on one line, separated by commas.
- Type one row per line, with cells separated by commas.
- Click Generate Table and copy the Markdown table.
Worked example
For the sample, the tool produces a table with headers Name, Age and City, a separator row of dashes, and rows for Ada (36, London) and Grace (40, Paris).
Why does a Markdown table need a separator row?
Because the row of dashes is what tells a Markdown reader that the first row is a header rather than ordinary data.
Frequently asked questions
What if a row has fewer cells than the header?
It is padded with empty cells so every row lines up with the header.
Can a cell contain a comma?
Not with this simple comma split: a comma inside a cell would be treated as a separator, so keep cells comma-free.
