How to Create a Mailto Link With Subject and Body

Mailto links turn a plain address into a one-click draft. This guide shows which parts are required, which are optional, and how they are encoded safely.

What is the Mailto Link Generator?

A mailto link saves your reader from copying an address and retyping a subject line. Enter the recipient, an optional CC, a subject, and a body, and this tool assembles a single link that opens the visitor's own email app with everything prefilled. It is a small convenience that makes contact forms and footers far more useful.

How to use it

  1. Enter the recipient email address.
  2. Add a CC, subject, and body if you want them prefilled.
  3. Click Generate Mailto Link.
  4. Use the link on a button or in text so it opens an email draft.

Worked example

For test@example.com with subject Hello, the tool returns a mailto link that opens a draft addressed to test@example.com with that subject prefilled.

What belongs in a mailto link?

A recipient address plus optional, URL-encoded parameters for CC, subject, and body. Each parameter is joined with an ampersand so the email app can read them separately.

Frequently asked questions

Will it send the email automatically?

No. It only opens a draft in the visitor's email app; they review and press send.

Can I leave the subject blank?

Yes. Any blank field is simply left out of the finished link.
