Lump Sum Investing: What a One-Time Investment Could Become
Investing a lump sum lets compounding work on the full amount from day one. Here is how to estimate its future value.
What is the Lump Sum Calculator?
This calculator projects a single lump sum investment using annual compounding: future value = amount times (1 + r) raised to the power of t, where r is the annual return and t is the number of years. No further money is added, so all growth comes from the original amount compounding year after year.
How to use it
- Enter the one-time amount you plan to invest.
- Enter the expected annual return and the number of years.
- Press Calculate to see the maturity value, the amount invested and the returns.
Worked example
Invest 50,000 at 10% per year for 10 years. The tool gives a maturity value of 129,687.12, an amount invested of 50,000 and returns of 79,687.12.
How do you estimate a lump sum's future value?
Multiply the invested amount by one plus the annual return, raised to the number of years. The difference between the result and the original amount is the return earned. Because the whole sum compounds from the start, time and rate both have a strong effect on the outcome.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a SIP calculator?
A lump sum calculator grows one payment made today, while a SIP calculator grows many monthly payments. Use this one when the money is invested all at once.
What if the return changes over time?
The calculator assumes one steady rate for the whole period, so the result is an estimate. Real investments rarely grow at exactly the same rate every year.
