What Is an EMI and How Is It Calculated?
Every loan advertises a monthly figure, but the EMI hides how much of it is interest. Here is how that figure is actually worked out.
What is the Loan EMI Calculator?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and part of the loan balance, so the loan is fully repaid by the end of the term. This calculator uses the standard EMI formula: interest is applied monthly to the remaining balance, and the payment is set so the balance reaches zero exactly at the last instalment.
How to use it
- Enter the loan amount.
- Enter the annual interest rate and the tenure in months.
- Press Calculate to see your EMI, total interest and total payment.
Worked example
Loan 10000, rate 8%, tenure 24 months: EMI about 452.27, total payment about 10854.55, total interest about 854.55.
Why is my EMI higher than the loan divided by the months?
Because interest is charged on the balance still owed, not just on the original amount. Early payments are mostly interest, and later payments are mostly principal. The EMI formula balances this so that one fixed payment clears the whole loan, interest included, by the final month.
Frequently asked questions
What does EMI mean?
EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment: the same fixed amount you pay every month until the loan is fully repaid.
Does a longer tenure always help?
It lowers the monthly EMI, but you pay interest for more months, so the total interest is usually higher.
