Line Counter Guide: Counting Lines Without Miscounting Blanks
Understand how line counting works and why blank lines are reported separately.
What is the Line Counter?
This tool counts every line in your text, including blank ones, and separates the two so you can see how much of the text is empty space. It also reports the longest line in characters, which is useful when checking lists, poems, code notes or pasted data.
How to use it
- Paste or type your multi-line text into the box.
- Click Count.
- Read the total, non-empty and blank line counts.
Worked example
For the sample, the tool reports 5 total lines, 4 non-empty lines, 1 blank line, and a longest line of 12 characters.
Why do two tools sometimes disagree on line count?
Usually because one counts a trailing newline as an extra line and the other does not, or because blank lines are handled differently. This tool counts the final line and reports blanks separately so you can see both.
Frequently asked questions
Does the last line count if it has no line break after it?
Yes. The final chunk of text counts as a line even without a trailing line break.
Is a line with only spaces blank?
Yes. Lines containing only spaces or tabs are treated as blank.
