JSONPath Basics: $.a.b, Indexes and Wildcards
JSONPath lets you point at values inside JSON without writing code. This guide explains the small subset that covers most everyday queries.
What is the JSONPath Tester?
JSONPath is a query language for pulling values out of JSON, but full implementations vary widely. This tool supports a documented subset only: a root $, dot-separated keys, numeric indexes like [0], and the [*] wildcard over arrays and objects, and it says so in its description. Anything outside that subset, or invalid JSON or path text, is reported with a clear error.
How to use it
- Paste the JSON document.
- Enter a path using the supported subset: $.a.b, [0] or [*].
- Click Test path and read the matching values.
Worked example
Running the sample path $.store.books[*].title against the sample JSON returns two matches: Dune and Emma.
What does $.store.books[*].title return?
The title of every book in the store array: the wildcard steps into each array item and the final key picks its title.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly does this tool support?
Only the documented subset: root $, dot keys, numeric indexes and the [*] wildcard. Filters, recursive descent and script expressions are not supported.
What does no matches mean?
The path was valid but selected nothing, usually because a key or index does not exist in that document.
