Ingredient Swaps: What to Use When the Cupboard Is Bare

Running out of one ingredient should not stop dinner. A good swap keeps the dish on track with a small, honest adjustment.

What is the Ingredient Substitution Finder?

This finder suggests a practical substitute for common ingredients, with a simple amount to use. The list is a curated starter set, not an exhaustive guide, and results are best for everyday home cooking. Always check allergies before using a swap, especially with nut, egg, and dairy alternatives.

How to use it

  1. Choose the ingredient you are missing.
  2. Enter how much the recipe needs.
  3. Click Find My Substitute and read the swap.

Worked example

For 100 g of butter, the finder suggests the same amount of coconut oil or margarine, or 80 g of olive oil for savoury dishes.

Can I replace butter with olive oil?

Yes, in savoury cooking you can use about 80 percent of the butter amount in olive oil, though the flavour and texture will differ slightly from butter.

Frequently asked questions

Will a substitute change the taste?

Usually a little. Swaps keep the structure of a dish, but flavourings such as honey, coconut, and olive oil each add their own note.

Are these swaps safe for allergies?

Not automatically. Always check the substitute against the allergies of everyone eating, especially for nut, egg, and dairy swaps.
