How to Watermark Images Without Ruining Them

A good watermark is visible enough to claim the image and faint enough not to spoil it.

What is the Image Watermark Tool?

The tool works out where the text sits on a 600 by 400 image from its length and size, then draws it at your chosen opacity in the browser. A watermark discourages casual copying, but it is not a legal proof of ownership and a determined editor can still crop or cover it. The browser preview uses a plain background rather than your own photo.

How to use it

  1. Type the watermark text
  2. Set its opacity, size and position
  3. Generate the preview and download it

Worked example

Sample at 50 percent opacity in the bottom right gives position x=493.6 and y=380 on a 600 by 400 image.

Where should a watermark go?

In a corner for light protection, or across the centre for stronger protection. Corners are easier to crop out, so the choice is a trade-off between looks and strength.

Frequently asked questions

Does a watermark stop copying?

It discourages casual reuse, but it does not make copying impossible, so keep the original file safe as well.

What opacity works best?

Around half opacity is usually readable without hiding the picture underneath.
